TB Tales, a short film competition on tuberculosis was instituted by the REACH- Lilly MDR TB Partnership. It sought to
tap into the power of films to sensitise and inform viewers, and bring about a structural change in public attitudes
regarding tuberculosis. The jury for the 2012 edition included eminent persons, viz, Suriya, Actor, Gautham Menon,
Film director , Dr P R Narayanan, Former Director, Tuberculosis Research Centre, Blessina Kumar, activist and
Vice Chair, Stop TB Partnership Board and Dr Subhash Yadav, Technical Officer, The Union South East Asia Office.
Winners announced
The first place award was given to Jagdish Vaidyanathan, from Kumbakonam, for his film ‘Mei: The Truth’.
Through a touching narrative, the film tells the story of a single parent, diagnosed with tuberculosis. Eventually,
he finds comfort from an unexpected source, his young son.
The second place was awarded to Rhea Lobo, from Chennai, for her film ‘Fight TB! Stay Beautiful’. Told
from a first person point of view, this engaging narrative reminds viewers of the gender-based stigma
associated with tuberculosis in India.
The third place was awarded to Elangovan from Chennai, for his documentary film ‘TB-Free India: An ongoing journey’.
This informative film takes the audience, through a day in the life of a health worker in suburban Tamil Nadu.
Special citations were awarded to three films:
